“Basic Navigation”

You enjoy walking in the UK countryside, but until now have relied on other people to navigate. This course is for you if you want to learn how to use a map and compass, and will give you a base of knowledge to put into practice on your next walk.

We run one or two day courses in all areas of the UK.

This is a walking day so you will learn on your feet.  You will be introduced to different types of map, map scales, grid references and map features.  Practical exercises will include measuring distance, compass use, orientating the map using both ground features and the compass, and simple navigation strategies such as hand railing and overshoot features.

We will provide;

  • A fully qualified Summer Mountain Leader as a minimum
  • Full day itinerary based on the groups experience, fitness and objectives
  • Kit list
  • Photographs

£40 per person with a minimum of 4 people for the course to run.

Intermediate Navigation

“Intermediate Navigation”

You’ve learnt the basics, put it into practice on a few walks, and you’re ready to take your navigational skills to the next level.  This practical course will teach you to be more self sufficient on the hills.

We run courses from a single day to a full week in all areas of the UK.

Building on the basics of navigation, we start to look at more complex navigational aids.

We cover;

  • Contour interpretation
  • Timing and pacing
  • Bearing and relocation techniques

We will provide;

  • A fully qualified Summer Mountain Leader as a minimum
  • Full day itinerary based on the groups experience, fitness and objectives
  • Kit list
  • Photographs

£40 per person with a minimum of 4 people for the course to run.

A

“Advanced Navigation”

Revising the skills from the basic and introductory course we will now develop your strategies for use in complex terrain such as the mountains and moorland of the United Kingdom.

We run one or two day courses in all areas of the UK.

We look at;

  • Poor visibility navigation
  • Timing and pacing
  • Relocation
  • Slope aspect
  • Strategies such as aiming off and attack points

We will provide;

  • A fully qualified Summer Mountain Leader as a minimum
  • Full day itinerary based on the groups experience, fitness and objectives
  • Kit list
  • Photographs

£40 per person with a minimum of 4 people for the course to run.

Advanced Navigation

Night Navigation

“Night Navigation”

Developing and practising strategies to navigate accurately at night or in poor visibility conditions.

We can run courses from a single day to a full week.

Working off 1:25000 map scales we will complete micro-navigation exercises to develop your abilities. Particularly suitable for those who are preparing for their mountain leader assessment.

We will provide;

“Hill & Moorland Experience”

Are you a landscape photographer?  An avid walker who wants to explore the hills away from large groups?  A wildlife enthusiast?

If you have dreamed of exploring in the hills and moorlands of Great Britain but your lack of confidence or experience is holding you back then our Hill and Moorland Experience could be just what you’re looking for.

We will tailor a day, a weekend or a full week to meet your needs.

We’ll include map reading skills, or the best photography spots, or wildlife areas, or a combination of all three!  Ask us and we’ll do our best to create your dream Hill and Moorland Experience. We will travel to any of the UK upland or moorland environments so set us the challenge and let us build your next adventure.

We will provide:

  • A fully qualified Mountain Leader
  • Full day itinerary based on the groups experience, fitness and objectives
  • Kit list
  • Training plans (if required)
  • Photographs

Priced at £150 per day for 1-2 people.

For 3 or more people the cost is £60 per person per day.
