“Open Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions”
In 2019 we are running a number of Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Open Awards. Suitable for young people who can’t attend their school or youth club expeditions, or who have had to defer through injury or illness. You can join us for the practice expedition, the qualifier expedition or both.
2019 Silver Practice Expedition Dates
Peak District 8 – 11 April, 12 – 15 April, 16 April – 19 April,
Yorkshire Dales 25 – 28 May, 29 May – 1 June, 26 – 29 October

Silver Practice expedition itinerary:
Day 1 – Arrive by 10am. Training will take place on site to cover the following topics: essential expedition skills, navigation, route planning, camp craft (putting up tents, cooking), meal planning.
Day 2 – Training will continue with a day of walking and navigation. Training will continue to be given until the instructor is confident that the group is able to operate under their own initiative.
Days 3 & 4 – Practice Expedition – the group will follow their planned route (up to 7 hours per day of travel) under remote supervision from our instructors. Day four will end around 4pm.
Silver Qualifier expedition itinerary:
Day 1 – Arrive by 10am. Kit check, route planning, emergency procedures, work on expedition aim, refresher sessions on navigation and kit packing.
Days 2, 3 & 4 – Qualifier Expedition – the group will follow their planned route (up to 7 hours per day of travel) under remote supervision from our instructors. The assessor will be at a number of checkpoints each day as well as visiting the campsites. The group will present their expedition aim to the assessor at the end of the expedition. Day four will end around 4pm.
Young people will be required to bring a packed lunch for the first day of each weekend, plus food for 3 evening meals, 3 lunches and 3 breakfasts – a food factsheet will be sent once a booking has been confirmed.
Accommodation will be in shared 2/3 person tents provided by RockRiver Expeditions, gas Trangia stoves will also be provided.
Maps and compasses will be provided.
We are able to hire the following items should participants need them:
Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, 50l or 60l rucksack.
A full kit list will be sent once a booking has been confirmed.
A minimum number of participants are required to run the expeditions.
