“Cairngorm 4000ers”
Cairn Gorm (1244m) – Ben Macdui (1309m) – Cairn Toul (1291m) – Sgor an Lochain Uaine (1258m) – Braeriach (1296m)
In the heart of the Cairngorms lies the Lairig Ghru pass, either side of the pass rise two great plateaus. These plateaus are home to five of the eight highest summits in Scotland. These mountains are Cairn Gorm (1244m), Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Toul (1291m), Sgor an Lochain Uaine (1258m) and Braeriach (1296m), all are over 4,000ft. They come together to form the Cairngorms 4000ers challenge, the route over all five tops is one of the finest and most challenging in the Scottish Highlands.
Day 1
We will start the challenge from the Coire Cas car park at the Cairngorm Mountain Centre, from there we will make our way over to the Chalamain Gap. Our ascent begins on a rough path which leads up the northern spur of Braeriach. Once the summit of Braeriach has been achieved we turn out attention to Sgor an Lochain Uaine working our way along the plateaux staying relatively high level. Our third and final peak of the day is Cairn Toul, from the summit we descend steeply in to the Lairig Ghru towards the bothy (which is small and quite often overcrowded) where we will wild camp for the night.
Day 2
After our night in the wilds of the Lairig Ghru we break camp, making our way towards the steep slopes of Ben Macdui and starting our ascent of the second highest mountain in the United Kingdom. From the summit, weather dependant, you should receive a 360 degree view of the Cairngorm plateaux’s, upon taking in the view we then head for the final summit of the challenge Cairn Gorm, from the summit we make our way back down the hillside back towards the Coire Cas car park.
